History of Rippon Landing
The Rippon Lodge Historic Site (Rippon Lodge) located on Blackburn Road, is known as one of the oldest homes in Prince William County. The Rippon Lodge is a place where people tour and experience a physical representation of colonial Virginia with tours being offered at specified times or by appointment. Rippon Lodge is located on over 40 beautiful acres where guests can participate in a number of special events held on the grounds
Home to a rich history, Rippon Lodge was built by Richard Blackburn. At the age of 32, he left his hometown in Rippon (now known as Ripon) in Yorkshire, England, and settled in Virginia. He built this home and named it Rippon Lodge after his hometown on a high hill overlooking the mouth of Neabsco Creek and the Potomac River.
Located on the property was King's Highway, once known as the Potomac Path. This was the main post road between the northern and southern colonies at the time. This historic road was frequently traveled by President George Washington and General Lafayette. The French and American troops during the Revolutionary War traveled this road as well. Tea bushes planted in colonial times can still be found growing on the property of the Rippon Lodge. These bushes could be found within the different colonies and served as a physical protest against the tea taxes levied by Great Britain.
Two of the daughters of the Rippon Lodge family line married and became women of Mt. Vernon. In 1785, the granddaughter of Richard Blackburn and daughter of Thomas, married Bushrod Washington, a nephew of George Washington. Later, a nephew of Bushrod, John Augustine Washington, married Jane Charlotte Blackburn. These two women are buried with their husbands at Mt. Vernon. Connecting the two families together.
